Unreal Engine now free*

* 5% royalty over $3000 per product per quarter. Pay no royalty for film projects, contracting and consulting projects such as architecture, simulation and visualization.

Unreal Engine 4 is now available to everyone for free, and all future updates will be free!  You can download the engine and use it for everything from game development, education, architecture, and visualization to VR, film and animation. When you ship a game or application, you pay a 5% royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter. It’s a simple arrangement in which we succeed only when you succeed.

I consider this an investment in the indie scene. Indie games are making a butt ton of money, Unreal wants their 5% and believes that someone can create the next Minecraft given the tools.

This is a great thing. The indie scene for me has mostly taken over all my gaming hobby and most of the great games over the last few years have put the big triple A companies to shame with their rinse and repeat formula's.

It was only a matter time Unreal woke up to this and the industry will be better for it.

It was expected, they did the same thing with Unreal Engine 3. Free, but if you're going to use it for commercial games and it sells at least a certain amount you'll have to pay royalties.
